What is a Blog?
A blog is a website. It is a channel where people can share their thoughts with the public. Some consider it as an online journal. Others use it as a medium to part something they are passionate about. In a blog, you can also educate others.
A post refers to a blog content. Posts are usually shown in reverse chronological order so that the latest appears first on top of the web page. It may include text, images or videos.
A blogger is someone who creates and publishes a blog post.
Things To Consider Before Starting A Blog
1.Niche. A niche is something you want to write. One of the elements of a successful blog is a specific niche. It is a topic where all your blog post revolves. Do not start a blog until you have chosen a niche. Do not buy a hosting plan until you have done your research about a niche market. Finding a niche market also involves knowing where your audience resides. Understand their problems. Determine the things they love to talk. Some recommend you start with your passion. However, blogging for passion alone is not enough. A niche must have a market, where people are willing to spend on it.
2. Purpose. You need to be clear about your goal. Why do you want to start a blog? If you are going to start a blog because you want to make money, then think again. Earning money online from the blog may take months or even years. It will not happen overnight. Your purpose in blogging is to provide solutions to the problems in your niche. You will provide insights that add value to your audience. People want valuable content. Make this as your number one priority.
3.Commitment. Starting a blog is easy but maintaining it is not. Commit to publishing relevant content regularly. I recommend releasing at least one or two posts weekly. If you cannot find time writing blog article, you can outsource it through a virtual assistant or a professional writer.

How to Start A Blog
Before you can start a blog, you need a host. A host is a place where your blog lives on the web. Web hosting allows others to view your blog on the internet. Choosing a reliable web hosting services is essential. There are free web hosting services where you can host your blogs such as blogger and wordpress.com. I do not recommend them because they lack the features that a self-hosted WordPress blog has. In a self-hosted WordPress blog, you have full control of your site. Moreover, you can improve the WordPress functionality using their plugins.
Choosing A Web Hosting Provider
Choosing a reliable web hosting provider is a crucial step in starting a blog. Since you are still starting, the cheapest package to have is a shared hosting plan. Shared hosting is a web hosting service in which many websites reside on one web server connected to the internet. It is best for sites with minimal traffic. Our discussions in this article are about starting a blog using shared hosting service.
For new bloggers, select a host that is trusted by users because of its uptime performance and reliability. Also, find a host that offers a reasonable price, user-friendly and high standards of customer support.
I recommend Siteground. Siteground hosts my three websites including an e-commerce and dropshipping store. I never had a problem with them. They have reasonable pricing plans. Their uptime performance and reliability are high. Most of all, their customer support is superb.
Why You Should Avoid Hostgator and Bluehost at All Cost
Other cheap hosting providers are HostGator and Bluehost.
I have several blogs currently hosted in HostGator, but I will not recommend it. I have severe experience with their customer support. Moreover, they are charging me for services I never used. I also notice some of my sites load slowly under HostGator. I will not renew my contract with them anymore.
Check out some HostGator reviews at Webhosting Geeks.
Bluehost is cheap, but I warn you. Bluehost today is a terrible web hosting company. I have several clients under Bluehost, and many have their worst nightmares. Frequent problems they encounter are slow loading speed and frequent downtimes. In one occasion, one website has malware in it. Their customer support is pathetic.
Read some Bluehost reviews at Webhosting Geeks.
You may wonder why most bloggers recommend Bluehost. The truth is; Bluehost pays its affiliates high commissions. Some of these affiliates are prominent bloggers earning 6-figure monthly income from Bluehost affiliate program. In fact, WordPress.Org does the same. It is not surprising that many will recommend this awful web hosting provider.
Endurance International Group (EIG) owns both Bluehost and HostGator. It is the largest web hosting company. EIG is known for firing good employees for short-term profits.
Here is a list of web hosting providers under Endurance International Group. Avoid them at all cost.
Another alternative for Siteground is Inmotion Hosting. I have no experience with them, but I heard their services are also decent.
This tutorial will teach you how to start a WordPress blog using Siteground shared hosting plan. Please refer to your hosting provider if you have chosen a hosting service other than Siteground.
How to Start A Blog With Siteground
1. Choose a Hosting Plan
Siteground offers three shared hosting plans for WordPress. Choose a hosting plan that works best for you.
StartUp Plan. It is ideal for blog starters. You get a 10GB web space. You can only host one website in this plan. It is suitable for 10,000 monthly visits. As a beginner blogger, your blog traffic is low. The monthly visit is not a restriction but merely a point of reference. In cases where blog generates more than the recommended visits, you may need to upgrade to avoid slow loading of web pages. Some hosting providers do not disclose this.
GrowBig Plan. When your blog generates more traffic, you may need to upgrade your plan. The GrowBig plan is ideal for 25,000 monthly visits. It includes a 20GB web space and can host unlimited sites. This plan has an in-house developed WordPress plugin that enables the Siteground’s SuperCacher for faster speed. GrowBig has backup creation tool and daily backup creation of 30 copies.
GoGeek Plan. This plan is perfect for e-commerce or bigger sites. You get 30GB of web space and is suitable for 100,000 monthly visits. The GoGeek plan has a premium backup restore services. It includes geeky features like staging and GIT integration. My websites are currently under the GoGeek plan because I run an online shop. The PCI compliance servers are necessary to protect credit card holder’s information.
All hosting plans offer free unlimited Let’s Encrypt SSL certificates, and unlimited free email accounts. My recommendation is to choose the Startup plan. You can easily upgrade your account once your blog grows.
2. Choose a Domain Name
Find a domain name that relates to the niche you want to blog, or something that people will search for in Google. Your domain is also the name of your site; hence, it should be something that people will likely remember.
Spend some time researching for the perfect name because everything you post on your blog will likely revolve around your blog name and niche.
Once you have chosen a domain name, check at NameCheap or GoDaddy if it is available for registration. Domains at Namecheap and GoDaddy are cheaper compared to other registrars. You can easily transfer them to your hosting account.
You can also register a domain in Siteground for $14.95.
3. Enter Your Information
Once you have chosen a hosting plan and a domain, it is now time to fill all your information.
4. Choose Your Initial Plan Length & Extras
If you want to try how good is Siteground hosting, I recommend you choose 12 months as your initial plan length. You can easily transfer after one year if you are unsatisfied with their service. Your plan comes with a 30-day money back guarantee.
If you trust Siteground, then you can lock in for three years at a discounted amount. After the initial term, renewal is at regular prices.
Extra services are optional features. I only recommend you purchase a Domain Privacy. When you register a domain, your personal information is available to the public. To hide this information, you need Domain Privacy.
I do not recommend you buy the SG Site Scanner for now. When your blog grows, you may need this. SG Site Scanner helps you protect your site by crawling and analyzing its pages for signs of malware.
5. Account Has Been Successfully Created
You have now set up your account with Siteground. You are just a few steps away from publishing your first blog post. The next step is to install WordPress.
6. Install WordPress
First, in Siteground customers area, go to the “My Accounts” tab and click the red button that says, “Go to cPanel.”
Second, in the “Autoinstallers” section, click on WordPress.
Third, click on the blue “Install” button.
Next, select which domain you will install WordPress. You may install a theme later. Finally, click install. Wait for the installation to complete.
Congratulations! You have just created a self-hosted WordPress blog. Your next step is to find a theme to customize the look of your blog. Now click on your WordPress administrative URL and see the appearance menu. Then, click Themes. Search for the theme you love to use on your blog and install. (For the complete guide on WordPress Theme installation visit How To Install A Theme On WordPress Blog For Beginners in 2018)
You are all done! You can now write and publish your first blog post.
Starting a self-hosted WordPress blog is easy. Starting a blog does not cost that much. Siteground offers $3.95 per month for the Startup Plan. The price is slightly higher compared to other hosting providers, but Siteground is noted for its excellent performance and reliability. Siteground also has excellent customer support. If you have problems, you can easily contact them via live chat.
Although starting a blog is not as difficult as you think, maintaining it is the hardest part. Choosing a hosting plan, registering a domain and installing WordPress are quickly done in few clicks. However, publishing content is the real challenge of your blogging journey.
