Install a Theme through WordPress Admin Area
You can easily install free WordPress themes from the WordPress.org free directory using the WordPress admin theme search function.
To do this, you need to login to your WordPress admin page (yourdomain/wp-admin/). Then, click on Appearance » Themes.
Here, you can see all themes installed on your blog. Next, click on the Add New button to add another one.
On the next screen, you have the option to browse Featured, Popular, Latest and Favorite WordPress Themes. If you know the specific name you want to install, you can find it directly using the search box. WordPress themes have tags that describe its purpose. You can use tags to search for specific themes.
If you are not familiar with tags, you can use the Feature Filter to find the one that is best for you. For example, you can search for Three Columns that have a feature image header. Just check those tags and click the Apply Filters button.
You will see all the WordPress themes that meet your conditions. When you have chosen, point your cursor on top of the image. You will see two options- to see a preview or to install it. Click preview if you want to see how it looks. Install it if you like.
WordPress application will automatically download and install it for you. Activate it after installation.
Proceed to your front page to see how your site looks.
How to Install a WordPress Theme using the Upload Theme Button
When you want a theme not found in the WordPress directory, you will have to use the Upload button. Premium products from mythemeShop, Studiopress or Themeforest will be installed using this method.
First, you need to download the WordPress theme that you bought from a marketplace or commercial provider. I use the mythemeshop theme as an example. I am currently using it because it loads fast and optimized for SEO.
Next, login to your WordPress dashboard and proceed to Appearance » Themes. Click Add New button choose Upload Theme.
Then, click the Browse button. Select the theme you downloaded from your provider and press the Install Now button.
WordPress will now upload and install it for you. After installation, click Activate to enable it on your blog. Proceed to your front page and see how your website looks.
As a beginner, you can easily install a WordPress theme. If you want a free one, WordPress has a large collection of it in their directory. These can be installed directly in your WordPress admin area in the theme section under the appearance menu.
If you want to spend some bucks, you can upload the file using the Upload button. Paid items from mythemeshop, Themeforest, Studiopress and other developers must be downloaded first to your computer before you can upload them.
